Confucius Institute Hosts Chinese Culture Summer Camp

MTSU’s Confucius Institute is hosting a different kind of summer day camp filled with fun for youngsters ages 7 through 12.

The Chinese Language and Culture Summer Camp is scheduled for June 10-14 in Room 106 of Peck Hall on the MTSU campus.

Activities include formal language lessons in basic vocabulary and conversation. Youngsters also will experience Chinese culture through games, crafts, calligraphy and art.

Courses and activities will start at 9 a.m. Parents may drop off their children as early as 8 a.m. and pick them up at 4:30 p.m.

Tenn. New Home Construction Cools in First Quarter

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Tennessee’s housing market cooled in the first quarter, even while job creation accelerated.

A first quarter analysis by the Business and Economic Research Center at Middle Tennessee State University shows that home construction fell by just over four percent compared to the final quarter of 2012. Home sales stalled and foreclosures are on the rise again.

Buchanan Estate Gives $2.5 Million to MTSU Honors College

A $2.5 million bequest from the estate of economist James M. Buchanan to the Middle Tennessee State University Honors College was announced today (May 9) in special ceremonies outside the Paul W. Martin Sr. Honors Building.

Buchanan family member Jeff Whorley of Indianapolis, Ind., made the formal gift announcement to MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee, Honors College Dean John Vile, invited guests, the campus community and alumni and friends of the university.

Job Fair Planned for Murfreesboro Friday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Goodwill’s Career Solutions division is hosting 30 job fairs across Tennessee this week, including one in Rutherford County.

Goodwill’s Career Solutions center in Murfreesboro will host eleven companies Friday beginning at 9 a.m. at their offices on Memorial Blvd.

Companies participating include Verizon, Abacus Staffing, Metro Industrial, and Centaur Building Services among others. The businesses are looking to fill more than 150 positions.

Middle Tennessee's Non-Profit Sector Thriving

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- A new study says Middle Tennessee’s non-profit sector is t and contributes, directly or indirectly, nearly $21 billion each year to the local economy each year.

The study was conducted by the Business and Economic Research Center at Middle Tennessee State University for Nashville’s Center for Non-Profit Management.

Dr. Murat Arik, the report's author, says that about one-in-four Middle Tennessee residents are employed in the non-profit sector.

Internet Sales Tax Bill Passes U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON (AP/WMOT) — The U.S. Senate has passed a bill that could end tax-free shopping on the Internet for many shoppers. Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander is a prime sponsor of the measure.

The bill now goes to the House where it faces opposition from some lawmakers who regard it as a tax increase.

Amazon Hiring Again in Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Amazon is hiring again here in Tennessee.

The online retail giant announced this past week that it’s taking applications at its Lebanon, Chattanooga, and Murfreesboro fulfillment centers.

The Murfreesboro facility is a million-square-foot warehouse that employees more than a thousand workers.

The open jobs are hourly positions picking and packing customer orders.

Applications are being taken online at workatamazonfulfillment.com.

New MTSU-Columbia State Pact Helps Childhood Education Majors Earn 4-year Degrees

An agreement signed today between Middle Tennessee State University and Columbia State Community College will help students majoring in early childhood education turn their associate degrees into bachelor’s degrees at MTSU’s Murfreesboro campus.

The agreement brings more transfer students into MTSU’s 101-year-old tradition of training Tennessee’s best teachers by easing Columbia State students’ access to the Bachelor of Science degree program in early childhood education at MTSU.

MTSU Professor Ascends to Leadership of Business Organization

An MTSU professor has been elected vice chair of the Association for Corporate Growth.

Doug Tatum, holder of the Wright Travel Chair of Entrepreneurship and an associate professor in the Department of Business Communication and Entrepreneurship, was voted vice chairman for 2013-2014 on April 23 at the group’s annual conference in Orlando, Fla.

Main Street Program Generates $82 Million, 600 Jobs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — State officials say a program that aims to revitalize downtown commercial districts in communities across Tennessee generated more than $82 million in private and public investment last year.

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development says its Main Street program includes 24 towns and cities in the state.

The department says 604 jobs were generated and 107 new businesses sprang up in the 24 communities in 2012.
