Catholic Challenge to Health Care Law Dismissed

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by a group of Catholic nonprofits in Nashville that challenged a provision of the new federal health care law.

An attorney for the nonprofits said in court earlier this month that the agencies have a religious objection to providing health care coverage for their employees that includes services like contraception and sterilization.

He asked U.S. District Judge Todd Campbell to issue an injunction, preventing the government from enforcing the so-called contraceptive mandate.

Bomb Threats Target Dozens of Tenn. Counties

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Authorities in Tennessee are investigating bomb threats that forced the evacuation of dozens of courthouses across the state, including several here in Middle Tennessee.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency’s Dean Flener says that - so far - bomb threats have been made against government facilities in 28 counties.

Former UT Board Member Says More Women Needed

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A former University of Tennessee trustee says more women should be appointed to the board.

There are thousands more women than men enrolled on the four UT campuses, but only seven women sit on the 26-member board that oversees the operations of the state's nameplate university.

Well-known mid-state television news anchor Anne Holt Blackburn, cycled off the board when her six-year term expired in June. She says female members are more passionate about certain issues than men on the board are, and the women think differently about issues.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (BEASLEY)  --  One of the world's top-ranked amateur golfers is coming to the Mid-State

Middle Tennessee State University's golf team recently signed Tae Wan Lee, the sixth-ranked junior golfer in the world according to Golfweek.

MTSU golf coach Whit Turnbow says Lee is a consensus junior all-American and is the highest rated recruit the Blue Raiders have ever signed.

Harwell Retains Tennessee House Speaker's Gavel

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Members of the House Republican caucus have nominated Speaker Beth Harwell for another term in charge of the chamber but ousted Rep. Judd Matheny from the No. 2 slot.

Matheny, of Tullahoma, was defeated Monday by Rep. Curtis Johnson of Clarksville in a secret ballot.

Matheny had publicly mulled challenging Harwell for the top post before deciding to focus on another term as speaker pro tempore.
