Gov. Haslam to Host Jeb Bush for Education Conversation
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Governor Bill Haslam will welcome former Florida Governor Jeb Bush to Nashville early next week for what’s being billed as a “candid conversation” about education reform.
The meeting is being organized by the State Collaborative on Reforming Education, or SCORE. SCORE is the brainchild of former Tennessee Senator Bill Frist. On the organization’s website SCORE is described as a "non-profit, non-partisan advocacy and research institution."
SCORE spokesman David Mansouri says Florida is a bit further along the education reform curve and hopes Tennessee can benefit from Bush’s experience.
“Florida has done really significant work around increasing academic standards for all students. You know, really changing the way that districts and schools are held accountable for student achievement, increasing student access to great educational options.”
Education reform was a major thrust of the last session of the Tennessee General Assembly and is expected to be a top priority for the governor and the GOP majority during the current session as well.
Haslam and Bush will hold their education conversation this coming Monday at 12:45 p.m. at the John Seigenthaler Center on 18th Ave. in Nashville. The public is invited to attend. The event will also be streamed live on the internet.
