Mid-State's Holiday Weekend Marred by Drowning Deaths
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- There are two mid-state holiday drowning deaths to report today.
The Daily News Journal reports 18 year old Smyrna High student Matthew Grissom was pulled out of the water near Walter Hill Dam in Rutherford County yesterday.
Randy White with the Rutherford County EMS told a reporter with WMOT reporting partner MT10 that rescue crews recovered Grissom’s body.
“He was swimming and we’re unsure what happened, but he became panicked. There were several people that were in the water with him and tried to assist him and were unable to.”
Diana Bauer lives next to the dam. Her thoughts turned to Grissom’s family.
“It’s a shame you know. Somebody’s child isn’t going to come home tonight and that’s just a shame. It makes me worry about my own grandchildren.”
A boating accident on Percy Priest Lake took the life of a 39 year-old La Vergne Man Sunday. Photos from the scene show the bow of the boat badly damaged. That accident is still under investigation.
A third man drowned at Burgess Falls in the Cookeville area over the holiday weekend.
