Feds Say 116,000 Tennesseeans No Longer Poor

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  -- More than three million Americans suddenly found themselves living below the poverty line yesterday, thanks to revised poverty figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Tennessee bucked the national trend, with 116,000 residents pushed above the poverty line as a result of the adjusted numbers.

The Census Bureau has started using a new formula for estimating poverty that it believes is more accurate. The revised figures show that 985,000 Tenneseans live in poverty, or 15.5 percent of the state’s total population.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The website NerdWallet.com is out with a list of the best places in Tennessee for job seekers to find employment.

Nerdwallet is a five year-old personal finance website targeted toward young professionals. The site makes recommendations for the best credit cards, mutual funds, travel ideas and even gas prices.

NerdWallet’s Annie Wang says the site’s visitors appreciate the site’s finance tools, but also wanted help finding work in a tough job environment.

MTSU to Conduct First Veterans Job Fair Nov. 7

The first BRAVO Veterans Job Fair at MTSU will be held next week, with about 20 companies already on board to potentially jump-start careers through jobs or internships.

The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Student Union Ballroom, said Malcolm Stallard, an MTSU sophomore and president of BRAVO — or Blue Raider American Veteran Organization.

The event is free to both attendees and company participants. It ushers in a full weekend of BRAVO and Salute to Armed Services-related activities.

MTSU Works to beat Conference USA in Food Donations for Needy Students

The MTSU Student Food Pantry’s holiday drive to restock the shelves will get a boost this year from a Conference USA competition.

The Conference USA Food Drive Challenge will pit MTSU against the other schools in the athletic league to determine which one can collect the most food for the needy from Friday, Nov. 8, to Sunday, Nov. 10.

Toward that end, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will set up tables at five athletic contests where donors may drop off their donations.

MTSU Offers Prescription Drug Take-back Event Oct. 25

The first MTSU Prescription Drug Take-Back Day was so successful that Campus Pharmacy, Public Safety and Health Promotion organizers immediately began planning for the second one.

Open to both the general public and campus community, it will take place from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the Student Health, Wellness and Recreation Center on the east side of campus. The drop off will be at the drive-up location next to the Campus Pharmacy drive-thru.
