Nissan's Tennessee Footprint Continues to Grow

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Already one of Middle Tennessee’s largest employers, Nissan continues to expand its footprint in the mid-state.

The Franklin based company announced Tuesday that by early next year its North American manufacturing capacity will pass the two million mark.

Production of a new 4-cylinder gasoline engine at the Nissan plant in Decherd, Tennessee is helping push the company past that milestone. The Franklin County plant is set to begin turning out an additional 250,000 engines per year.

$700 Million Franklin Project Announced, VUMC Project Stalls

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A major new commercial development in Franklin was announced this week, while the start of a second large project for the area is being pushed back.

Developers Highwoods Properties and SouthStar llc announced plans on Tuesday for a mixed-use development they’re calling Ovation to be built in the Cool Springs area .

According to development officials, the project will include 1.4 million square feet of new office space on roughly 150 acres south of the Nissan headquarters along Interstate 65.

In Spite of Anemic Growth, Tenn. Exports Reach Historic Highs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee's exports are in record-high territory, but a mid-state researcher says 2013 has actually been something of a disappointment.

Dr. Steven Livingston of the Business and Economic Research Center at Middle Tennessee State says exports are up by just 1 percent, but that was enough to push the state to all-time export highs.

Exports were $16 billion, up $300 million from the same period last year. Livingston says Singapore is this year’s bright spot.

GM, Nissan See Record July Sales, VW Sales Fall

DETROIT (AP/WMOT) — General Motors and Nissan,  two of Tennessee's largest employers, had record setting sales in July.

GM, with a large plant in Spring Hill, saw a 16 percent rise in sales when compared to July 2012.  Franklin based Nissan reported and 11 percent gain, its best July ever.

Only Volkswagen, which has a large production facility in Chattanooga, had a down month. Its sales were off slightly more than 3 percent as sales of the top-selling Jetta compact fell.
