church state separation

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — The Putnam County Commission will consider placing the motto "In God We Trust" on all four sides of the courthouse in Cookeville.

According to the Cookeville Herald-Citizen, the Colonial View Baptist Church is leading the effort. The church brought the proposal to the county's planning committee this week. The committee recommended the proposal to the full commission for consideration. That vote is scheduled for October 15.

Univ. of Tennessee Sports

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — University of Tennessee officials say prayer before football games at Neyland Stadium does not violate the U.S. Constitution.

According to The Knoxville News Sentinel, the university is preparing a formal response to a letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF). University spokeswoman Margie Nichols says the administration believes there is no reason to halt the tradition of a pre-kickoff invocation.
