NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Gov. Bill Haslam will begin his review of the state's college and university systems next week.

The Commercial Appeal  reports Haslam will assemble business, legislative and higher education leaders for a meeting at the governor's residence on July 10.

An invitation sent from the governor's office to members of the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees, Board of Regents and others says the meeting will also feature presentations by three leading higher education policy experts and that Haslam will moderate discussions after each presentation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Tennessee student scores are up overall in the latest round of assessment tests of elementary and middle school students.

Gov. Bill Haslam and Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman announced the statewide test results at a Nashville middle school Tuesday.

The governor credited the state's recent emphasis on improving education standards in Tennessee for producing the improved results.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (AP/WMOT) — The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees have approved tuition hikes that range from 8 percent at the Knoxville campus to 3.5 percent at the university's College of Law.

UT President Joe DiPietro told reporters after the vote Thursday that nobody wants tuition hikes, but there’s little alternative.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Middle Tennessee State University broke ground on its new $147 million dollar science building Thursday afternoon.

Governor Bill Haslam, Speaker of the Tennessee House, Beth Harwell, and a large delegation of state legislators joined MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee in turning ceremonial shovels of dirt on the construction site.

MTSU’s enrollment has more than quadrupled in the years since the school’s current science buildings were constructed. The new building has been at the top of Tennessee higher education’s wish list for years.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — The Tennessee House has passed Gov. Bill Haslam's bill to require mandatory jail time for people with repeat domestic violence convictions.

The chamber voted 98-1 to approve the bill. The lone vote against the measure came from Democratic Rep. Eddie Bass of Prospect.  Bass says the bill shouldn’t be passed until the state agrees to pay local governments the entire increased costs of putting more abusers in jail.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Governor Haslam has signed into law a bill legislators hope will boost parent-student-school involvement.

Under the proposal, parents would agree to - at a minimum - help with homework, sign report cards, attend school functions, and show up for parent-teacher conferences.

A second measure advancing in the Legislature proposes so-called parent report cards. That proposal is awaiting floor votes in both chambers.

Tennessee PTA President Karen Davis is opposed to both measures.
