Renowned guitarist Geary Moore brings his soulful, straight-ahead artistry to the inaugural jazz set at Puckett’s Boat House. This event will take place Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. In his career, Geary has performed with such Hammond organ greats as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Charles Earland and Jack McDuff.

MTSU’s jazz faculty will pay tribute to legendary trumpeter, composer and bandleader Kenny Wheeler with a special free concert, “Flutter By, Butterfly: Remembering Kenny Wheeler,” set Monday, Nov. 17.

The 7:30 p.m. event will be held in Hinton Music Hall inside MTSU's Wright Music Building on the MTSU campus. It is free and open to the public. 

A special video presentation will precede the concert at 7:10 p.m.

Wheeler, who died at age 84 in London in September, led numerous large and small ensembles and has been called a "fearless improviser." 

MTSU Salsa Band

The MTSU Salsa Band will be performing Nov. 6, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hinton Hall in the Wright Music Building.

The MTSU Salsa Band is an ensemble dedicated to the study and performance of Afro-Cuban Salsa music. The group includes a horn section, percussion section, a bass and a piano. The percussion section generally includes congas, timbales, bongos and a drum set, while the horn section includes trumpets, saxophones and a trombone.

Next time on Improvised Thoughts with Beegie Adair we spend some time with singer/pianist Freddy Cole in a program first heard in 1993.  He was in town for a performance at the World Baptist Center and was kind enough to give us some time to chat about a new album he'd just released, "Freddy Cole Live at Birdland West."   Documenting his concert and nightclub performances during 1992 and '93, the CD featured an outstanding band including, among others, Red Holloway (sax) and Jerry Byrd (guitar).  The disc is a collection of a dozen gems including two original nods to his brother Nat ("He wa
