memorial day

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Gov. Bill Haslam plans to honor four Marines and a sailor killed in last year's shootings in Chattanooga as part of a Memorial Day ceremony on Friday.

Those killed were Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, and Marines Staff Sgt. David Wyatt, Sgt. Carson Holmquist, Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan and Lance Cpt. Squire "Skip" Wells.

Federal officials have determined that the shootings by Muhammad Abdulazeez, a naturalized U.S. citizen, were a terrorist-inspired event. That made the servicemen eligible to receive the Purple Heart.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT)  -- Warm weather is always welcome as Tennesseans head out-of-doors to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend, but the Weather Service says the state may mark the traditional beginning of summer with record heat.

Nashville office Weather Service Meteorologist Sam Herron says there’s a good chance some hundred year-old high temperature records may fall in the next few days. He says Tennessee is seeing a summertime weather pattern nearly a month before summer actually begins.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — State wildlife officials say seven people have died in boating accidents in Tennessee so far this year. Reported deaths are up over the same period last year.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is urging boaters planning on spending Memorial Day on the water to wear life jackets. TWRA spokesperson Betsy Woods also notes that it's illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
