One Dead in Murfreesboro Drive-By Shooting

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  Murfreesboro Police are investigating a deadly drive-by shooting that left one man dead early Monday morning.

Police say that just after midnight several shots were fired into a wedding celebration taking place in the front yard of a home near the intersection of East Chestnut Street and North Academy Street.

One man was killed in the incident. Police say he’s from Alabama, but haven’t released a name pending notification of the family. No other deaths or injuries have been reported at this point.

Murf. Police Asking for Public's Help Locating Murder Suspect

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) — Murfreesboro Police are asking for the public's help locating a murder suspect.

The MPD is searching for a man suspected of fatally shooting one person and wounding another before sunrise Sunday morning.

Police say 21-year-old Domynik Green is wanted for the shooting death of of Terrelle Shannon, also 21. A second person was wounded in the shooting, but received only minor injuries.

Green is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and with being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Mid-State Poor Gain Access to Fresh Food

MURFREESBORO,Tenn. (GRIGGS) --Tennesseans getting public food aid can now use their electronic benefit cards to buy locally grown produce at the Rutherford County Farmers Market.

In addition to giving the poor access to fresh food, Rutherford County Extension agent, Janie Becker says, it also opens a new market for growers.

“Increasing purchasing options to our consumers directly helps strengthen our small farm and home businesses that are represented here at the market, so by increasing our local purchasing options it helps both consumer and farmer.”

Madden Gets 29 Years Without Parole

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — A Memphis woman has been sentenced to 29 years in prison for fatally stabbing a Middle Tennessee State University women's basketball player.

Rutherford County Circuit Court Judge Don Ash on Tuesday sentenced Shanterrica Madden of Memphis to 25 years for second-degree murder and four years for tampering with evidence. The sentences will be served consecutively.

Madden was convicted in May in the March 2, 2011, death of 21-year-old Tina Stewart at an off-campus apartment they shared.

Murf. Panhandlers Stir Up Controversy, Concern

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT)  --  Controversial comments made by a Murfreesboro firefighter are causing local officials to ask their own questions about the recent rise in panhandling on city streets.

The Daily News Journal ran a story this week on posts by firefighter Gregory Burt. Burt reportedly complained about a street-corner beggar that he claims really is not in need.

Now some Murfreesboro city commissioners and Mayor Tommy Bragg are also voicing concerns about beggars at the city’s busiest intersections.
