Tennessee NAACP Protests Martin Shooting

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP/WMOT)  --  The Tennessee chapter of the NAACP is ramping up protests across the state in response to the death of Trayvon Martin.

The unarmed 17-year-old black teenager was shot in Sanford, Florida, just over a month ago by a neighborhood watch captain who says he acted in self-defense.

Gloria Sweet-Love, president of the state NAACP, said protests are scheduled in several cities around the state, including a protest Wednesday in Memphis.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn  (WMOT)  --  More than 100 students gathered on the Vanderbilt campus this morning to protest changes the university recently made to its policies governing student organizations.

The new policies require that, to remain certified, student organizations must allow any student to join and also allow all-comers to stand for leadership positions in the group.

The policy is being contested, largely by Christian groups, that insist their officers must be students who share their core beliefs.

NASHVILLE, Tenn (AP/WMOT) — A proposal that seeks to prevent Occupy Nashville protesters from staying overnight on the plaza next to the state Capitol advanced in the Tennessee General Assembly yesterday.

The measure sponsored by Republican Rep. Eric Watson of Cleveland was approved on a voice vote in the House Judiciary Subcommittee. The companion bill is awaiting a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Plan to Walk Around Three Downtown Banks

Occupy Protesters March in Murfreesboro

An Occupy Wall Street inspired march is getting underway at this hour in downtown Murfreesboro.

Occupy Murfreesboro leaders have permits to assemble on the grounds of the county courthouse.

Protestors say they’ll also march around three downtown banks; all within a few blocks of the square.

One of the protest organizers, local resident Connor Moss, says Occupy Murfreesboro usually has about 20 people at their meetings, but expects about a hundred protesters to attend today’s march.
