Some Mid-State Schools Go Under State Microscope

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Several Middle Tennessee school systems will be watched more closely by the state following the release of this year’s educational assessment scores.

Metro Nashville is the only mid-state system with schools that scored in the bottom five percent of all assessments. As a result, six metro schools are subject to state intervention.

TCAP Scores Rise in Latest Round of Tests

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Tennessee student scores are up overall in the latest round of assessment tests of elementary and middle school students.

Gov. Bill Haslam and Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman announced the statewide test results at a Nashville middle school Tuesday.

The governor credited the state's recent emphasis on improving education standards in Tennessee for producing the improved results.

Wants TCAP Scores Up by 20% in Five Years

Gov. Haslam has Ambitious Education Goal

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Gov. Bill Haslam says he’s looking to improve Tennessee students' proficiency scores by 20 percent over the next five years. Haslam says that kind of improvement would provide evidence that his education overhaul is working.

Education commissioner Kevin Huffman says assessment scores currently show that only 40 percent of Tennessee third graders rank as proficient in reading, while just 29 percent of seventh graders are proficient in math.
