NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The head of Vanderbilt University’s counseling degree program says the school will continue to train therapists using current professional standards in spite of a new state law that voids some of those standards in Tennessee.

In its most recent session, the Tennessee General Assembly passed a law (HB1840/SB1556) that shields therapists from discipline by the American Counseling Association if they turn a patient away due to the counselor’s strongly held personal beliefs.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Members of the House Republican caucus have nominated Speaker Beth Harwell for another term in charge of the chamber but ousted Rep. Judd Matheny from the No. 2 slot.

Matheny, of Tullahoma, was defeated Monday by Rep. Curtis Johnson of Clarksville in a secret ballot.

Matheny had publicly mulled challenging Harwell for the top post before deciding to focus on another term as speaker pro tempore.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — State Rep. Judd Matheny tells The Associated Press he is no longer considering a challenge to fellow Republican Beth Harwell for House speaker next year.

Matheny announced last month that he was looking into a bid for the top post in the 99-member House because he felt marginalized by other Republican leaders.

Now Matheny says he’ll seek another term in his current position as House speaker pro tempore instead. Besides speaker, it is the only post elected by the entire lower chamber of the General Assembly.
