Tenn. Road Construction Halted for Holdiday Weekend

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — The State of Tennessee is trying to make your holiday travels just a bit easier.

Transportation Commissioner John Schroer is ordering road construction in the state to stop by noon Friday. It won’t resume until Tuesday morning.

There still could be workers on the site of some construction zones, so obeying lowered speed limits is still required.

Captain David McGill of the Tennessee Highway Patrol says the THP will not be taking take the holiday off.

Tennessee Forms Unit to Investigate Identify Theft Cases

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Tennessee's Safety Department is creating a new unit to investigate identity theft crimes.

Deputy Commissioner of Safety and Homeland Security Larry Godwin says that the 14-member unit will be made up of personnel from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the state Office of Homeland Security and the Driver Services division.

Godwin says identity theft and fraud crimes are a growing problem in Tennessee, but many local law enforcement agencies don't have enough resources or manpower to investigate these crimes.

Unemployed Must Search for Work to Keep Benefits

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Beginning on Sept. 1, Tennesseans claiming unemployment benefits will have to show that they’re actively looking for work, including keeping a work-search log.

The state Department of Labor’s Jeff Hentschell says claimants will be required to conduct three work searches each week.

“Sending a resume through email, applying for a job online, going into a Tennessee Career Center, or logging on to our jobsfortn.gov website…it’s a variety of approaches and I think we’ve hit most of those."

Opponents Continue to Contest Murfreesboro Mosque

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro received its final occupancy certificate Thursday. Friday, opponents of the Mosque continued their effort to prevent the new worship center from being used.

Islamic Center of Murfreesboro board chairman Essam Fathy says he’s relieved and happy the mosque has its permanent occupancy permit.

Since construction was approved in May 2010, the mosque has been targeted by vandalism, arson and a bomb threat.
