THP Saturation Patrols Through Christmas

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be stepping up enforcement over the Christmas holiday. 

Christmas is one of the most dangerous times of the year for motorists due to an increase in impaired driving. According to the Tennessee Department of Safety, the increased enforcement begins just after midnight tonight and runs through midnight Dec. 25.

THP Captain David McGill says it includes saturation patrols, bar and tavern checks, and driver license and sobriety checkpoints.

Tenn. Road Construction Halted for Holdiday Weekend

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — The State of Tennessee is trying to make your holiday travels just a bit easier.

Transportation Commissioner John Schroer is ordering road construction in the state to stop by noon Friday. It won’t resume until Tuesday morning.

There still could be workers on the site of some construction zones, so obeying lowered speed limits is still required.

Captain David McGill of the Tennessee Highway Patrol says the THP will not be taking take the holiday off.

Drop Attributed to Crackdown on Drunk Driving

Tenn. Highway Deaths Way Down

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee's highway deaths in 2011 stayed below 1,000 for just the third time in 48 years.

Preliminary figures released by the Tennessee Department of Safety show the state had 947 traffic-related deaths last year. According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, that could make 2011 the safest year on Tennessee roads in nearly a half century.

Last year's preliminary figure is six more than the total in 1963, when the state was less populated and fewer cars were on the road.
