Federal Sequester Budget Cuts May Hurt Neediest College Students

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Tennessee’s poorest students may find it harder to stay in college next year as federal sequestration budget cuts take hold.

Money for so-called Opportunity Grants, federal tuition aid reserved for the neediest students, will be reduced in the coming school year.  Federal funding for college work-study programs is also expected to fall.

According to Tennessee higher education officials, 1660 needy students could lose federal tuition assistance, while 720 students participating in work-study could lose their positions.

Police Say Men Swallow 50 Heroin Balloons

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Two men remain in the Williamson County jail today after Franklin police say they swallowed more than 50 balloons of heroine.

Officers set up surveillance Monday in the parking lot of a Cool Springs business following on an anonymous tip about drug activity. Police say they saw two men acting suspiciously and took them into custody.

Heavy Rain, Possible Flooding This Weekend

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The National Weather Service is warning that Tennessee will see heavy rains and possible flooding this weekend.

Nashville based Weather Service Forecaster Sam Herron says heavy rains will start in West Tennessee this evening and arrive in Middle Tennessee tomorrow morning.

Herron says this is a slow moving system that will likely dump two to three inches of rain on ground that’s already saturated and streams that are already running high.

Holly Bobo's Brother Speaks About Her Disapearance

PARSONS, Tenn. (AP) — The brother of a young West Tennessee nursing student who was last seen walking into the woods with a man two years ago says he has been maligned.

Holly Bobo disappeared on April 13, 2011, from her family's home in Parsons. Clint Bobo saw his sister and a man wearing camouflage clothing walking away from the carport and into the woods.

MPD: 2 Days, 2 Shooting Deaths, Same House

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) --  Authorities are investigating two shooting deaths that took place a day apart at the same Murfreesboro home.

The first death occurred early Saturday morning at 2506 Gold Valley Drive. Police say an officer responding to a 911 call found 33 year-old Reginald Hughes shot. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators interviewed several people who were in the home at the time of the shooting. A statement released by police later Saturday said they were still investigating, but had tentatively ruled the death a suicide.
