Econ Report Predicts Slow Growth in 2013 for Tennessee

MUFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The University of Tennessee is out with a yearly economic forecast that state government uses to plan its budget and the outlook is mostly favorable.

The study, prepared by the UT Center for Business and Economic Research, predicts Tennessee’s economy will grow this year, but at an even slower pace than in 2012.

One of the factors contributing to slow growth is the end of a payroll tax holiday implemented two years ago.  UT’s Matt Murray, one of the report’s authors, says Tennessee retailers are already reporting lower sales.

Tennessee Drug Deaths Up 250% in Past Decade

CHICAGO (AP/WMOT) — Drug overdose deaths are up dramatically here in Tennessee and in the nation.

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows there were more than 38,000 drug overdose deaths nationwide in 2010. Of those deaths, 1059 occurred here in Tennessee.

Prescription narcotics were involved in nearly 60 percent of those deaths, overshadowing those from illicit drugs. OxyContin and Vicodin contributed to 3 out of 4 medication overdose deaths.

300 Involved in Near Riot in Downtown Murfreesboro

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Eight people were arrested this past weekend following a near riot in the parking lot of a Murfreesboro night club.

Every available Murfreesboro police officer was called to the scene of a brawl early Sunday morning at the club Main Street Live on West Main downtown. In all, more than 15 officers responded, including officers from the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department.

Smyrna Woman Indicted for Her Children's Heat-Stroke Deaths

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — The mother of two young children who died after being left inside a hot car in Smyrna has been indicted on charges of murder.

The Daily New Journal reports the Rutherford County Grand jury has charged Samantha Harper with two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated child neglect for the Aug. 2 deaths of her children.

KKK Plans Rally in Memphis Over Confederate Parks

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Ku Klux Klan has applied for a permit to hold a rally next month in Memphis over the decision to strip off Confederate names from Memphis city parks.

WMC-TV in Memphis reports that the city received an application from the group. Police said the KKK is planning a rally on March 30.

Chief Administrative Officer George Little said if approved, they’ll be treated like any other group.
