Burriss on Media: Responsibility

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (BURRISS)  --  One of the hallmarks of the American system of media is called the “social responsibility theory,” which says you can publish what you want without government interference, but you have to face the consequences of your actions.

Put on perhaps more crass terms, we tell our student journalists, “You want to play with the big kids, then you have to be treated like a big kid,” which means taking responsibility for what you publish.

MTSU Football Looks for a Win in Florida

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders are on their way to Florida for Saturday’s game against Florida International University at Miami.

The last couple of weeks have been a real roller-coaster ride for MTSU. Two weeks ago the Blue Raiders pummeled Georgia Tech 49 to 28. But this past week the Raiders stumbled against the University of Louisiana at Monroe, losing their homecoming game 31-17.

FIU will be playing their homecoming game, and Coach Rick Stockstill says MT will have to be in top form to win.

Enviro. Groups Challenge Mountain Top Mining in Tenn.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Environmental groups are challenging a state permit for a mountaintop removal mining operation in East Tennessee.

The Sierra Club and two other groups filed an administrative appeal yesterday with state environmental regulators. The petition says the permit from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation doesn’t meet federal clean water standards.

The Zeb Mountain mining site in Campbell and Scott counties is operated by National Coal. It’s the largest mountaintop mining site in Tennessee.

Tenn. Meningitis Outbreak: Friday Update

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Health officials report that the number of cases of rare fungal meningitis in Tennessee has increased by five to 49 cases.

The number of deaths in Tennessee from the outbreak remains at six. That’s according to an update posted on the state Department of Health website. Nationwide the number of cases increased to 170 cases, including 14 deaths in 11 states.

Sheriff Arnold Says County Jail Understaffed

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT/MT10)  --  Sheriff Robert Arnold says Rutherford County’s Adult Detention Center is badly understaffed and is asking County Commissioners for a budget increase.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Lisa Marchesoni says there are currently only two deputies on each floor of the jail. Each floor houses roughly 150 to 200 inmates. She says some guard posts in the jail are routinely left unmanned, a situation that's dangerous for the guards as well as the inmates.
