MTSU and the Tennessean Host Community 'Tweetup' to Address Child Obesity

MTSU and The Tennessean tag-teamed Twitter March 20 to help alert and inform middle Tennessee about the dangers of childhood obesity in an inaugural on-campus “Tweetup.”

Attended by about 100 people in person and followed in a live stream at www.BrainstormNashville.comand on Twitter and Facebook by dozens more, the discussion featured presentations by MTSU’s Dr. Don Morgan, an expert on physical fitness and childhood obesity, and Tennessean Health Editor Heidi Hall.

Scott to Bring Creationism vs. Evolution Talk March 26 at MTSU

Eugenie C. Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education in Oakland, Calif., will speak at MTSU Monday, March 26, starting at 7 p.m.

Scott will discuss “Creationism vs. Evolution” in her presentation, which will be held in the Business and Aerospace Building’s State Farm Lecture Hall, (BAS 102). The event is free and open to the public.

Graduating Seniors’ Art on Exhibit at MTSU’s Todd Gallery

Join the MTSU Art Department for the first of the spring semester’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Candidate’s Exhibits, “Still Working,” on Monday, March 19, in the University’s Todd Art Gallery.

The exhibit, which will include an artists’ reception on March 19 at 6 p.m. in the Todd Gallery, runs through Thursday,March 22. It features work by Cullen McMackins, GT McMahon, Rhett Moser, Jennifer Baker and Dave Rollins.

Concurrent Enrollment and Reverse Transfer Agreement Signed

The presidents of MTSU and Nashville State Community College signed an agreement March 14 to make it easier for students to earn degrees from both institutions.

MTSU’s Dr. Sidney A. McPhee and Nashville State’s Dr. George Van Allen officially authorized a Concurrent Enrollment and Reverse Transfer Agreement to ease the processes between the two Tennessee Board of Regents institutions and encourage students’ academic success.

Lady Raiders to Play Vanderbilt in Opening Round of Women's NCAA Tournament

The Lady Raiders basketball team was invited to the women's NCAA tournament and will head to Nashville to battle Vanderbilt on Sunday, March 18th. The game has a scheduled tip-off of 4:10 cst. Tickets are priced at $16 for all ages. MTSU students can purchase tickets prior to Wednesday at noon for only $8.

MTSU Alternative-Fuels Researcher Ricketts plans Coast to Coast Trip on 10 Gallons of Gas

MTSU alternative fuels expert Dr. Cliff Ricketts firmly believes he can drive coast-to-coast on 10 gallons of gasoline or less.

Ricketts, a 35-year agriscience professor at MTSU, plans to put his research to the test in both 2012 and 2013.

Ricketts’ first quest to travel the approximately 2,532-mile distance from Tybee Island and Savannah, Ga., to Long Beach, Calif., will begin Sunday, March 4.

St. Rose, Ravenwood Capture Regional Science Olympiad Titles

MURFREESBORO — Teams from St. Rose of Lima School in Murfreesboro and Ravenwood High School in Franklin captured their respective B (middle school) and C (high school) Regional Science Olympiad championships on Feb. 25 at MTSU, Pat Patterson, coordinator of the event, said Feb. 27.

St. Rose, coached by Lori Klukowski, finished ahead of St. Henry School of Nashville in the middle-school category. Smyrna’s Stewarts Creek Middle School place third, Spring Hill Middle fourth and Winfree Bryant Middle School of Lebanon placed fifth.

MTSU Team Serves Up ‘Mixed Plate’ of debate Feb. 29

The rejuvenated MTSU Debate Team is welcoming the public to its annual "Mixed Plate Debate" on Wednesday, Feb. 29, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the State Farm Room of the University’s Business and Aerospace Building.

The event, open to the public, will split the team into three groups, each of which will represent one of the top candidates for the 2012 Republican nomination for president. The teams will then debate various political topics, defending their assigned candidates' own views onsubjects like war and the national budget.
