Eighteen young people converged on a youth camp in LaVergne for a grief counseling session sponsored by Alive Hospice.

Latest Jobless Numbers Mostly Good News for Mid-State

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- The Tennessee Department of Labor has released the county-level unemployment numbers for July.

The state unemployment rate jumped last month by two-tenth to 8.4 percent. The national jobless rate also rose by a tenth to 8.3 percent.

Williamson County continues to have the mid-state’s lowest unemployment at just under six percent. Davidson, Sumner, Rutherford and Wilson counties are all reporting jobless numbers at 7.4 percent or lower.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT) -- The Murfreesboro Muslim community is deeply disappointed that they won’t get to celebrate Ramadan in their new mosque, according to an Islamic Center spokesman.

In a hearing on the case yesterday, Rutherford County Chancellor Robert Corlew re-affirmed his earlier ruling that construction of the Mosque can proceed, but Rutherford County won’t be allowed to issue a certificate of occupancy for the facility once it’s complete.

Judge Again Rules Murfreesboro Mosque Can't Be Used

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT) -- A Rutherford County judge has reaffirmed his earlier ruling that the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro will not be allowed to occupy its new mosque.

At the end of May Rutherford County Chancellor Robert Corlew voided the mosque’s construction permit, saying the county failed to provide proper notice for the meeting where the permit was approved.

Corlew allowed construction of the mosque to continue, but told the county it could not issue a certificate of occupancy for the building once it’s complete.

Rutherford County Commission Votes To Challenge Judge's Mosque Ruling

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- The Rutherford County Planning Commission has voted to appeal a court decision that voided their approval of the Murfreesboro Mosque.

The Planning Commission voted 6 to 1 Monday night to challenge Rutherford County Chancellor Robert Corlew’s decision in the case. Corlew ruled May 29 that the Commission failed to provide sufficient public notice for the 2010 meeting at which they approved the mosque’s construction permit.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (WMOT) -- A national Islamic group says it’s alarmed by the reasoning cited by Rutherford County Chancellor Robert Corlew in his decision to void the Murfreesboro Mosque’s construction permit.

The Washington D.C. based Council on American-Islamic Relations sent a letter this week to the U.S. Department of Justice, asking for federal intervention in the case.

Academic Gains for Mid-State Schools

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Six of the 18 Tennessee schools honored this week for academic gains are located here in the Mid-State. Two are located in Rutherford County.

Principal Barbara Sales of Murfreesboro’s Hobgood Elementary and Principal Andra Helton of Rutherford County’s Thurman Francis Elementary picked up “Value-Added Achievement Awards” for their schools on Monday.

The awards are based on data tracked by the Tennessee Department of Education and indicate schools that show significant improvement in test scores year-over-year.
