Big Mid-State Employer Sees Sales Decline

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Some disappointing sales numbers were released Wednesday by one of Middle Tennessee’s biggest employers.

Nissan reported a sales drop in September of 2.4 percent. The company’s North American division, headquartered in Franklin, fared somewhat better with a sales decline of just over one percent.

There were some bright spots. Sales of the Nissan Rogue and Pathfinder were both up significantly.

Nissan says September sales of its new LEAF, all-electric vehicle, were the best the car has seen this year.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) – More than a thousand Middle Tennessee residents lined up in the cold for hours over the weekend to apply for a job at the Smyrna Nissan plant.

Yates Services hosted the job fair at the State Career Center in Murfreesboro on Saturday.

Tennessee Department of Labor area manager R.J. Sherr says all the jobs are assembly line positions on third shift that pay between $12.50 and $18.50 an hour.

Tenn. Loses More Manufacturing Jobs

Tennessee lost more than 56 hundred manufacturing jobs over the past year, and that’s actually good news. The state lost four times that number of industrial jobs in the previous year.

The business directory, the Tennessee Manufacturers Register, says the state lost about 1.5 percent of its manufacturing jobs. The register says Tennessee is now home to just over 7200 manufacturers employing right at 375,ooo thousand workers.

Murf. Job Fair Attracts 3800+

MURFREESBORO, TN (AP) An estimated 3,800 people waited in line in Murfreesboro hoping to get one of the 1,600 jobs at Nissan as the automotive manufacturer looks to ramp up hiring for a new battery plant at its Smyrna facility.

Yates Services, a maintenance contractor at the plant, held a job fair on Wednesday for part-sorting, production line and forklift positions and the response was the largest turnout for any Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce job fair.

A big job fair underway at this hour here in Murfreesboro.

Nissan is interviewing for 1,100 new workers at their Smyrna Plant.

The Tennessee Department of Labor is hosting the event at the Embassy Suites on Conference Center Boulevard in Murfreesboro. The positions need to be filled by the end of February.
