MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro has celebrated its official opening with food and fellowship.

The Daily News Journal reports guests on Sunday included U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee Jerry Martin and U.S. Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Thomas Perez.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro says it plans to celebrate the end of Ramadan this Sunday in its new mosque.

The Mid-State congregation worshiped in their new facility for the first time this past Friday. Mosque Board Member Saleh Sbenaty says it was an incredibly exciting day.

“It just cannot be described. I mean you should have seen the kids and how excited they were. The elders who were crying as they entered the mosque.”

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Muslims in the Tennessee city of Murfreesboro were able to celebrate Friday prayers in a new mosque after more than two years of controversy about the building.

Opponents of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro who sued to try to halt construction were nowhere to be seen. Instead the worship space was filled with smiling men, women and children.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro hopes to get permission to occupy its new worship center Tuesday morning. Spokesman Saley Sbenaty says the mosque is waiting for a final inspection by the State Fire Marshal’s office.

“There is one thing that we’re going to check tomorrow, which is the final fire pump and fire alarm inspection. Hopefully tomorrow around ten o’clock everything will be checked out and we’ll have the certificate of occupancy.”

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Plaintiffs who have waged a two year long court battle to halt construction of the Murfreesboro Mosque apparently intend to continue the fight.

The Tennessean reported Tuesday that the plaintiff’s attorneys have filed a new motion in the case. Plaintiffs hope to intervene in a federal judge’s ruling that allows the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro to occupy their new mosque once it’s complete.

Attorney Says Mosque Opponents Were "Robbed"

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- The plaintiff’s attorney leading the two year-long court battle to stop construction of a new mosque in Murfreesboro has issued a scathing appraisal of federal involvement in the case.

Attorney Joe Brandon Jr. says his clients have been “robbed,” a word the lawyer says he uses "very intentionally." He notes that plaintiffs won their case in Rutherford County Chancery Court, only to have the decision voided in federal court.

Spokesman Says Mosque Likely Not Ready for Start of Ramadan

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- A spokesman for the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro now says congregants likely will not get to celebrate the beginning of Ramadan in their new mosque.

The Center’s leadership filed a lawsuit in federal court in Nashville yesterday, asking that a chancery court order denying them occupancy of the new building be lifted immediately. That order was granted yesterday evening.
