Blood Spatter Expert to Speak at MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- One of the nation’s foremost forensic blood-spatter experts is scheduled to make a presentation in the mid-state.

Middle Tennessee State University will welcome forensic specialist Paulette Sutton to the campus as the keynote speaker for the school’s annual Forensic Institute conference.

Sutton is a University of Tennessee grad who now consults on cases worldwide. She started her career as a crime lab technologist, but developed a fascination with blood-spatter while visiting crime scenes.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- A mid-state researcher has achieved a goal he’s been working toward for the past 30 years, successfully completing a drive across the United States without using any gasoline.

Middle Tennessee State University alternative fuels expert Cliff Ricketts reached the Pacific Ocean at Long Beach, California, Thursday evening, capping a journey that began in Georgia on the Atlantic Coast five days earlier.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- A mid-state professor hopes to make history Thursday, capping 25 years of research.

Middle Tennessee State University’s Dr. Cliff Ricketts was crossing California’s Mojave Desert early Thursday morning on the final leg of his 2600 mile, no-gas, cross-country drive.

Ricketts and his team left the Georgia Coast this past Saturday driving modified Toyota sedans that run on hydrogen fuel. The hydrogen was separated from water using solar energy.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- A mid-state researcher is trying this week to drive across the United States without using gasoline.

Middle Tennessee State Ag professor Cliff Ricketts is attempting to drive cross-country using only hydrogen fuel and solar energy.

Ricketts and his team left the East Coast over the weekend and hope to make it as far as Arkansas by this evening.

So why is an Ag professor so interested in alternative fuels?

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — A Middle Tennessee State University professor says his coast-to-coast trip using no gasoline had to work around a glitch on the first day.

But Dr. Cliff Ricketts said he's "99 percent sure" the transmission coolant problem his backup driver experienced Saturday was not related to the hydrogen fuel the car is using.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- More than 100 archeological digs get under way in Tennessee in any given year and the public has a chance to learn about the most exciting of those projects this weekend.

The Tennessee Division of Archeology and Middle Tennessee State University are partnering to hold a state archeology showcase Friday and Saturday at the Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville.

Dr. Kevin Smith, Professor of Archeology at MTSU, says one of the most exciting finds in recent years was the discovery of cave paintings here in Tennessee.

Powered by at least nine MTSU students’ work since 2008, Dr. Charles Perry continues driving toward success in the development of the plug-in hybrid retrofit kit for any car.

Perry, who holds the Russell Chair of Manufacturing Excellence, and a five-member team saw gas mileage increase anywhere from 50 to 100 percent on a 1994 Honda station wagon retrofitted with laboratory prototype plug-in hybrid capability.
