KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Two administrators at the University of Tennessee say they can’t support health insurance benefits for same-sex partners of UT employees.

According to The Knoxville News Sentinel, a letter from university Chancellor Jimmy Cheek and Agriculture Chancellor Larry Arrington was read to a UT Faculty Senate meeting yesterday. In it, Cheek and Arrington stated that offering benefits to unmarried gay partners would violate state statute.

Governor Concludes Higher-Ed Listening Sessions

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has wrapped up a series of meetings that focused on the future of the state’s higher education system.

Beginning in June, the governor held listening sessions in seven cities from Blountville in the far northeast to Memphis in the southwest. Haslam sought comment from educators, business leaders and legislators.

School Year Begins with New Round of Tuition Hikes

MURFREESBORO, Tenn, (ANFINSON) -- Students on college campuses across Tennessee are bracing for yet another tuition hike. The Tennessee Board of Regents voted recently to increase tuition at all of its institutions, including a 6.8 percent increase at Middle Tennessee State.

Students attending schools in the University of Tennessee system will also face sharp hikes.

Tuition Will Likely Rise at UT Institutions

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Students in the University of Tennessee system will find out this week how much their tuition will be in the fall.

The finance committee of the UT Board of Trustees is scheduled to make the tuition projections on Wednesday and the full board will vote on them Thursday.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- It’s long been known that college graduates earn more money. A new study suggests earning a degree quickly may also pay off in higher earnings.

A new study by the University of Tennessee and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) says that students who earn a degree within four years make more money than those who take longer to finish.

Pat Summitt Honored by President Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) —Pat Summitt was honored by President Barak Obama with the Medal of Freedom yesterday afternoon during a White House ceremony.

Summitt stepped down last month after 38 years as the Lady Volunteers head coach because she's suffering from early-onset dementia, Alzheimer's type.

In his remarks honoring Summitt, President Obama noted her remarkable coaching record and her tenacity.
