Another Meningitis Fatality in Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — Tennessee has suffered another fatality resulting from a deadly meningitis outbreak.  

Health officials say the number of people sickened has now reached 105 cases. Eight people have died, four in Tennessee.

The fungal meningitis outbreak has been tied to steroid shots for back pain. The steroid was made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts.

New Jobless Benefits on Declining Scale

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — State labor officials have begun enforcing new unemployment requirements passed by the Legislature.

WMOT-FM (http://bit.ly/VRBvTq ) reported that the longer a person is jobless, the less salary he or she can refuse and still keep unemployment benefits.

After 13 weeks, for example, a person offered a job at 75 percent of previous salary could lose benefits for not accepting it.

Burriss on Media: Big Bird

I have to start with a confession or disclosure or whatever the politically correct term is: I have personally met both Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. Not just some quick meet-and-greet, but some real, honest-to-goodness, hang-out-together time.

Well, maybe it was only four or five hours. And I really don’t think they remember when and where and why we met. But I do, and I have the pictures to prove it.

So when I heard that presidential candidate Mitt Romney wants to fire my good friend Big Bird, well, you can understand why I was so upset.

Tennessee's Employment Forecast: "The Fog is Pretty Thick."

WASHINGTON (AP/WMOT) — The U.S. unemployment rate has fallen below 8 percent for the first time in nearly four years.

The U.S. Labor Department says the jobless rate fell to 7.8 percent last month as employers added 114,000 jobs.

The State of Tennessee won’t release its unemployment numbers for September for another two weeks, but joblessness in Tennessee has been climbing steadily in recent months. The unemployment rate stood at 8.4 percent in August.

Fire Marshall Warns of Cold-Snap Fire Hazards

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  With temperatures falling this weekend area fire departments are warning residents about fire hazards.

Murfreesboro Assistant Chief Fire Marshall Ken Honeycutt says he sees avoidable tragedies every year at this time as people turn on some type of heat.

Honeycutt says one problem he sees routinely in the fall is people pushing furniture up too close to wall-mounted, thermostat-controlled electric heaters during the summer months.
