One in Ten Tennessee Teens Claims Dating Violence

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (NELSON) -- A new federal study shows that about one Tennessee teen in ten reports being the victim of dating violence.

According to a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 9 percent of high school students have been purposefully hit, slapped, or physically hurt while in a relationship.

Surprisingly, male teens report abuse nearly as often as female students. However, the female population’s domestic violence rate is slightly higher at 10.1 percent. For Tennessee males the rate is 8.7 percent.

Tennessee Keeps Some Pension Promises, Breaks Others

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Tennessee has largely kept its state retiree pension promises, making it one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal state pension report.

A new study by the Pew Center on the States says that as of the end of 2010 the fiftey states were $1.38 trillion behind in payments to retiree pension and health care accounts.

Mid-State's Syrian Émigrés Watch Conflict Unfold

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — The Syrian-American community here in Middle Tennessee is following the fighting in Syria closely.

NATO will hold emergency talks tomorrow to discuss Syria's downing of a Turkish jet fighter on Friday, but the alliance isn’t expected to take military action even if it finds Syria at fault.

Meanwhile the killing continues. Some 40 people were reported killed in Syria yesterday in new clashes between rebels and government troops. Opposition activists say the conflict has killed 14,000 people, mostly civilians, over the past 15 months.

Triple-Digit Temps in Tennessee by Friday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Temperatures across Tennessee are predicted to build during the week, reaching triple-digit readings by Friday.

The National Weather Service forecasts call for late week high temperatures of 101 degrees in Nashville and Clarksville and 100 degrees in Memphis.

Even the uplands will be hot — reaching 95 degrees in Gatlinburg and 94 in Crossville.

Reaction to Murfreesboro Mosque Federal Indictments

MURFREESBORO, Tenn (AP/WMOT) — Opponents and supporters of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro were on hand Thursday for the announcement that a Texas man has been charged with threatening to bomb the Center last fall.

Federal officials announced that two indictments have been filed in Nashville against 24-year-old Javier Alan Correa of Corpus Christi, Texas.
