NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  If you plan to travel on Tennessee highway's this holiday weekend, you won't be alone.

AAA says more than 39 million Americans are expected to travel during the Memorial Day holiday. The group's Stephani Milani says it will likely be the busiest Memorial Day since 2005.

“If you look at the number of Tennessee travelers, we’re expected to top 785.000 travelers, and that’s a two percent increase over last year.”

AAA says Memorial Day 2017 will be the third consecutive year that holiday travel has increased with just over 88 percent traveling by car. The group says it rescued more than 330,000 motorists last Memorial Day weekend, so they recommend you have a mechanic give your car a once over before you hit the road.

While overall travel is expected to rise by nearly three percent over last year, travel by air is forecast to be up even more dramatically. AAA says they expect the number of people flying this Memorial Day weekend to jump about 5.5 percent.
