ACLU seeks federal intervention on Tennessee restroom rule

aclu.org

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is asking the federal government to intervene over a school district's policy prohibiting transgender students from using restrooms corresponding to their gender identity.

The ACLU wrote the letter to the U.S. Department of Education on Thursday. The letter asks the U.S. Department of Education to require that the school system in Sumner County make accommodations for transgender students.

The letter was written on behalf of a high school student who is a transgender girl. Officials told the student's family that she would be disciplined if she continued to use the girls' restroom.

Todd Presnell is an attorney for the school system. Presnell said in a statement that transgender students are provided access to private unisex facilities.
