Afghanistan vs. Tennessee: An International Debate

MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  The ancient art of debate intersected with the latest in communications technology earlier this week at Middle Tennessee State University.

MTSU’s debate team faced off against a debate team in Afghanistan by way of Skype video conferencing. The debate focused on the internet and democracy.

The competition began just after midnight Tuesday morning; the middle of the day in Afghanistan.

MTSU debate coach Patrick Richey says his team was impressed with the competition.

“It was the first time either team debated in an international format. Both teams want to do it again, they want to do it soon, and they would love to do it over there.”

Dr. Richey says a trip to Afghanistan probably isn’t in the cards anytime soon, but does hope to travel with his team to an international debate competition in Southeast Asia in the near future.
