Airlines cancel thousands of flights ahead of Northeast snow

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)  --  Nashville International Airport is starting to see flight cancelations to the northeast as a major snow storm snarls air travel nationwide.

Almost 1,900 flights scheduled today have been canceled, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware. Nearly 1,800 additional flights have been scrapped for tomorrow.

Emily Richard is a spokesperson for Nashville International.

“If you’re heading to the northeast, especially to the New York area, including Newark, Philadelphia, Boston and Baltimore, definitely want to check your flight before you head to the airport. A lot of airlines are already  pre-canceling flights for tomorrow.  And if you are flying in the next couple of days, no matter where it is, definitely check your flight ahead of time too.”

Most major airlines are allowing customers whose flights are canceled in the next few days to book new flights without paying a penalty. Customers ticketed on flights to dozens of Eastern airports are generally eligible for the allowance, though specific terms vary by airline.

The National Weather Service predicts 2 to 3 feet of snow for a 250-mile stretch of the Northeast, including the New York and Boston areas. Philadelphia should get 14 to 18 inches.
