Alias Ensemble to Present February 17th Concert

“Awake At Night” is the first commission I’ve received to write for string quartet, which for a violinist, may be the purest form of composition. I’m excited especially that it is for the highly regarded ALIAS ensemble. —Composer-musician Conni Ellisor, on her World Premiere String Quartet for the Winter concert

“The Ties Eternal” — for soprano, percussion, two violins and two cellos — sets Walt Whitman’s moving text “Darest Thou Now, O Soul, Walk out with me toward the Unknown Region…” about venturing into the great unknowns of our universe. This will be my first string quartet premiere! I’m also very excited to collaborate with the ALIAS professional-caliber musicians.
—Composer Daniel Elder, on his Word Premiere for the Winter concert

For me composing is a chance to try out alternatives. I’m the one who has control over where the music is going to take me. The most exciting thing is that after I’ve composed it, I get to perform it with great musicians like Ali, Jeremy and Sari.
—Compose ALIAS musician Chris Farrell, on “String Quartet No. 2”, also Premiering at the Winter Concert

The February program is particularly interesting, as it features six American composers, four of whom are Nashville residents! It brings “Think local” to a new level.
—Zeneba Bowers, ALIAS Artistic Director

Don’t miss this opportunity to witness three world premieres at the ALIAS Winter concert! The February 17 performance features six pieces — 100% American composers. These include a trio by Leonard Bernstein and an unpublished short duo by Aaron Copland. ALIAS will also perform a new composition by Matt Walker – “Wood” – a duo for marimba and violin (commissioned by Rebecca and Eric Willie).
