Analysis: Tennessee is failing its most vulnerable children

wallethub.com

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Tennessee is one of the state’s failing to give poor children a fair shot at the American Dream, according to a new survey by the personal finance website wallethub.com.

Tennessee placed 36th among the 50 states in a Wallethub study ranking the best and worst states for underprivileged children. The report measured 15 metrics, including child mortality, poverty rates, food security, safety, and education.

Wallethub analyst Jill Gonzalez says Tennessee is doing a relatively good job of keeping poor children in school, but on the down side the state has too many kids living in poverty.

“Tennessee ranks 41st here. Almost 27 percent kids are living in a below poverty household.”

Gonzalez says it’s in everyone’s best interest to ensure children have the tools they need  to become financially secure, productive members of society.
