MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  With the final day to file your tax return fast approaching a new study suggests Tennesseans are getting a surprisingly big bang for their tax buck.

WMOT reporting partner Wallethub.com has just completed a report on the States with the Best and Worst Taxpayer Return on Investment. To rank the states, Wallethub compared tax rates with the level of provided services in key area such as Education, Health and Safety.

Wallethub analyst Jill Gonzalez says Tennessee placed eighth on the list, ranking higher than all of its Southern neighbors. She says the state’s low tax rates are largely responsible for the high score.

On the other hand, Gonzalez says the quality of services provided to Tennesseans is definitely lacking, especially with regard to safety.

“We looked at specific things here, the crime rate per capity, fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel – so basically road fatalities – and the then the incarceration rate per capita. So those three things combined to put Tennessee pretty far down there as far as safety.”

Wallethub says New Hampshire provides the best return on taxpayer investment, while North Dakota provides the worst.
