MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A group associated with the Black Lives Matter movement plans to protest the annual candlelight vigil at Graceland to mark the anniversary of Elvis Presley's death.
The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/2b5ZRYl ) the Memphis Coalition of Concerned Citizens is calling the planned Monday protest "Operation Blue Suede Shoes." Group member Al Lewis said the group, which has protested the killing of black people by police, chose Graceland because it "represents the tremendous disparity of what works for a few what doesn't work for the many."
In July, some demonstrators were detained and cited for blocking Elvis Presley Boulevard outside of Graceland, which is a major tourist draw for the city.
Elvis Presley Enterprises spokesman Kevin Kern told the newspaper Graceland officials are working with local law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety.
