LA VERGNE, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities say a high school wrestler was killed in a car crash on Interstate 24 in La Vergne, and his teammate who was driving the vehicle could face criminal charges.

According to a report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 16-year-old Daniel J. Winters of Murfreesboro died after the vehicle struck a rock wall and overturned around 2:15 a.m. Sunday.

THP Lt. Bill Miller told The Associated Press later Sunday that criminal charges are pending against the driver of the vehicle, 18-year-old Michael Brobeck. An investigation is ongoing.

Brobeck was injured in the crash. His condition has not been released.

Winters attended Blackman High School in Murfreesboro. He and Brobeck had qualified for the TSSAA state wrestling tournament during a meet at Siegel High School on Saturday.
