Carol Sloane on Improvised Thoughts with Beegie Adair

Next time on Improvised Thoughts with Beegie Adair, we're joined by Carol Sloane. She is a "singer's singer" - one of those rare vocalists whose name may not be universally known, but is immediately identifiable, respected and admired by those who play the music & follow it closely.

In a program from 1995 with her, then, newly-released CD "The Songs Carmen Sang," Carol Sloane pays tribute to her close friend Carmen McRae (who had died the previous year).  Accompanied by a group including the magnificent Phil Woods, and a world class trio including: Bill Charlap-piano; Michael Moore-bass and Ron Vincent-drums, Carol Sloane delivers highlights including:  "I'm Gonna Lock My Heart (And Throw Away the Key)", "If The Moon Turns Green", "Just You, Just Me", "I'm an Errand Girl for Rhythm", & "The Folks Who Live On The Hill."  She says, these "titles are some of the songs I most loved to hear Carmen sing, and there is a tag on the end of the CD which establishes this as a unique recording. Carmen often left messages on my home message machine, but this one I cherished and saved. You can hear it for yourself after “I’m An Errand Girl For Rhythm,”" at the show's conclusion.

"The Songs Carmen Sang" was the first in a trilogy of CDs done by Carol Sloane devoted to three of our most admired singers: The Songs Carmen Sang (1995); The Songs Sinatra Sang (1996); and, The Songs Ella & Louis Sang (with Clark Terry) (1997). Join us here on WMOT as Beegie Adair welcomes Carol Sloane in this encore broadcast of Improvised Thoughts. The two get along famously!

Improvised Thoughts is a production of 89.5 WMOT-FM, Middle Tennessee Public Radio.
