MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Sound professionals from all over the world are here in Middle Tennessee this week for a conference of the Audio Engineering Society.

The conference is the first by the society to focus exclusively on audio education. The Department of Recording Industry at Middle Tennessee State is hosting the gathering.

Event co-chair Bill Crabtree says the conference has attracted sound professionals from across the U.S. and beyond.

“Japan, Australia, Sweden, Scotland, UK; really world-wide. Of course the U.S.: We have folks from Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Florida.”

Crabtree notes that the number of large, working recording studios has fallen in recent years. But he says conference speakers are making it clear there are still plenty of opportunities for recording industry graduates.

“The number of large format studios has gone down, but the number of small format studios – because of the growth of digital audio workstations, there are opportunities - they’re just with smaller scale operations.”

Crabtree says live performance sound is another area of expanding opportunity for audio specialists. The MTSU conference ends Saturday.
