Deadline for Tenn. AG applications is noon Friday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The deadline to apply with the Tennessee Supreme Court for the next eight-year term as state attorney general is noon Friday.

Tennessee is the only state where the high court appoints the attorney general.

The justices plan to hold public hearings with candidates they deem qualified for the job.

Incumbent Attorney General Bob Cooper, whose term expires at the end of the month, has applied for another term. Cooper was the subject of much criticism from conservative activists who worked unsuccessfully to oust Democratic justices from the Supreme Court in this month's retention elections.

The ouster effort was spearheaded by Republican Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey and largely funded by his political action committee.
