MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- Crime at Tennessee’s colleges and universities has fallen dramatically in recent years, but a closer look at the annual campus crime report shows some surprising problems at mid-state schools.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released its annual crime on campus study for 2014 on Monday. The report shows an overall drop in crime of more than 6 percent over 2013.
But a closer look reveals that Vanderbilt University had Middle Tennessee’s highest rate of on-campus sex related crimes last year. The school accounted for 22 of the 89 incidents reported state-wide.
Fisk University had the mid-state's largest number of assaults as a percentage of campus population in 2014, a far higher rate than any other campus in the region.
Tennessee State had the area’s worst drug problem last year, recording the highest number of drug related arrests, again as a percentage of its student population.
Middle Tennessee State University, where the majority of students commute to classes, reports having 8 vehicles stolen from the campus in 2014, more than any other school in the area.
