A disturbing trend in latest Tenn. college crime report

TBI

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A report out Monday says crime on Tennessee’s college campuses is down overall, but there’s been a disturbing increase in the number of sex related incidents.

The annual report compiled by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation shows an overall decline in campus crime of 6.3 percent between 2013 and 2014. Robberies, burglaries and assaults were all down last year.

However, the number of Sex Offenses involving the use of force were up by nearly 75 percent. The number of reported rapes jumped from 26 incidents in 2013 to 46 in 2014.

One campus homicide was reported in 2014 and there were 9 cases of abduction.

Drug related charges were up 10 percent in 2014, but the number of arrests for drunkenness, disorderly conduct and DUI were all down.

The TBI says the number of crime reports of all types is down sharply over the past four years. There were more than 7,700 campus crimes reported statewide in 2011, but just over 6,300 in 2014.
