Ex-Vol Williams set to go on trial in aggravated rape case

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Former Tennessee cornerback Michael Williams is scheduled to go on trial Monday to face aggravated rape charges.

Williams and former Tennessee linebacker A.J. Johnson each face two charges of aggravated rape in which the other is said to have aided and abetted. According to Knoxville police, the woman said the incident occurred at an apartment in the early-morning hours of Nov. 16.

Johnson was granted a motion for a separate trial, which is set for Sept. 29.

Williams and Johnson were indicted in February after being named as suspects in a rape investigation and suspended from the team in November. Williams, a 22-year-old from Laurel, Maryland, no longer appears on Tennessee's roster. Johnson has graduated and completed his eligibility.
