Feds to investigate Middle Tennessee State athletics

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Middle Tennessee State University says it will cooperate with a federal investigation launched this month into allegations of discrimination against female athletes.

The Daily News Journal says it obtained a copy of a letter sent to the federal Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Education. The letter reportedly asserts that female athletes at MTSU are not being treated equally with male athletes.

The letter goes on to allege that MTSU is failing to provide equal travel and travel expense reimbursements, coaches pay, training facilities, or housing for female athletes.

The newspaper quotes MTSU Athletic Director Chris Massaro saying he “reaffirms” the school’s commitment to women’s athletics and promises to cooperate fully with the investigation.

CBS News reported earlier this week that there are more than 170 universities across the nation currently being investigated following allegations of discrimination.
