Flu at epidemic level in Tenn., could peak this month

cdc.gov

NEW YORK (AP) — Health officials across the country and here in Tennessee say the flu has reached epidemic levels in 43 states and could peak soon.

Dr. Kelly Moore with the Tennessee Department of Health says this year’s flu vaccine isn’t working as well as hoped, but still recommends you get that shot.

“The vaccine is still the best tool we have to prevent or reduce the severity of illness of the flu, so we’re still strongly recommending that you get it.”

If you have a child home sick with what you suspect might be the flu, Dr. Moore suggests when its time to seek medical care.

“If they’re having any difficulty breathing, if they seem listless, if they’re having a hard time waking up and conversing, those are signs that perhaps immediate attention is needed.”

Moore says that for those without insurance flu shots are available for free or at reduced cost through your local county health clinic.

The flu appears to be peaking early this year, but experts warn a second wave could sweep the country before the season runs its course.
