Former MTSU Lady Raider Olivia Jones says she quit, wasn't suspended

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  Middle Tennessee State Athletics told media outlets last week that Lady Raiders basketball standout Olivia Jones had been suspended, but Jones now says that isn’t what happened.

In an article out Monday in the Daily News Journal, Jones is quoted as saying she quit the team over issues with head coach Rick Insell last Thursday following the game against Texas-El Paso.

Jones says she plans to talk with MT Athletics Monday about getting an official release from the team so that she can transfer to another university.

Jones told the newspaper that she doesn’t like Insell’s style of coaching and has been unhappy for the past year.

She’s been one of the Lady Raider’s top performers and was named the Conference USA pre-season player of the year.

The Lady Raiders won a squeaker Saturday against Texas at San Antonio without Jones. The team is now 5-9 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
