MUFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT) -- The federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agency says it’s efforts to curb violent crime in Murfreesboro has “surged” in the past year.
The ATF is partnering with Murfreesboro Police to investigate gang activity in the city. Agent Michael Knight with the Nashville ATF office says they are focusing in particular on a gang called the Gangster Disciples.
Knight says gang members have been implicated in a number of local crimes, including home and auto burglaries, shootings, narcotics trafficking, and weapons trafficking.
Knight says officials aren’t exactly sure just how many gang members are in the area.
“There are a lot of transient individuals that go through the Murfreesboro area, some of which may attend or have attended the local universities, so to have an exact number of the ones who reside in the area and the ones who are committing violent crimes is not exactly known.”
ATF is today offering a $2000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a leader in the Gangster Disciples. Adareus Dixon is wanted on several drug related charges.
