Gas prices down sharply, will likely fall further

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  A fuel price analyst with AAA says Tennessee now enjoys some of the cheapest gas prices in the nation, and he predicts prices will fall still further through the end of the year.

AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report says the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded paid in Tennessee today is$3.13, that’s 25 cents below the national average. Here in Murfreesboro, Gasbuddy.com lists more than 20 stations selling a gallon of gas for under $3 per gallon.

Josh Carrasco with AAA says we have the change of seasons to thank for the lower prices.

“Refineries switch over from the summer blend which has more additives in it to burn off during the hot summer months, to the now winter blends. So, when the refineries do that the winter blend is a little cheaper to produce so we tend to see gas prices start to go down around this time of the year.”

Carrasco also notes that U.S. crude oil production has risen to a 24 year high, adding to the downward pressure on fuel prices. He says fuel costs are likely to fall still further before the end of the year.
