Gas Prices High, But Headed Lower for the Fourth

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  If you plan on traveling over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, be prepared for some of the highest fuel prices in six years.

AAA says gas prices are falling across the nation, but in spite of the decline those prices remain the highest the nation has seen in early July since 2008.

AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins says the average price for regular unleaded gasoline in Tennessee on Monday stood at $3.46 per gallon, that’s more than 20 cents below the national average.

“Gas prices in a lot of the Southeastern States are trending downward; a little less than half a cent each day, so that’s certainly good news for motorists. Unfortunately, gas prices remain relatively elevated compared to recent years for the Independence Day holiday.”

Gas prices in Murfreesboro are trending even lower than the state average, with GasBuddy.com showing a number of local stations selling regular unleaded for $3.39 a gallon Monday morning.

AAA says it expects more than 34 million motorists to hit the roads over the Fourth, the most to do so in seven years.
