General Motors spends big to upgrade Spring Hill plant

GM

SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WMOT)  --  General Motors say it will begin work immediately on a $148 million upgrade to its assembly plant at Spring Hill.

In a press statement released Thursday, GM says the project will retool the plant to build a new V8 engine. The company says the investment will help retain about 200 jobs at the mid-state facility.

GM says the Spring Hill upgrade is part of a companywide investment of $700 million since it ratified a new labor agreement with the United Autoworkers last year. The company says it has spent more than $1.3 billion on the Spring Hill plant since 2010.

The release says the plant at Spring Hill was designed to accomodate quick changes to its assembly line, allowing GM to respond quickly to evolving customer demand.
