"In God We Trust" Recommended for Putnam County Courthouse

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP/WMOT) — The Putnam County Commission will consider placing the motto "In God We Trust" on all four sides of the courthouse in Cookeville.

According to the Cookeville Herald-Citizen, the Colonial View Baptist Church is leading the effort. The church brought the proposal to the county's planning committee this week. The committee recommended the proposal to the full commission for consideration. That vote is scheduled for October 15.

The Rev. Al Gaspard is the pastor at Colonial View Baptist Church.

“Since our money contains the words 'In God We Trust' and we use our money, we felt as though if it was good enough for the money why couldn’t we put it on the courthouse where we spend money.”

The church hopes to raise the funds to pay for placing the national motto on the courthouse.

Gaspard says a rally to pray for the nation will be held Monday evening at Prescott Middle School South on East 10th Street in Cookeville.
